I don't know either and I have seen uncloaked mercs with the different chevron. I thought at first it was telling me that the merc was either above or below me but I don't think that is correct either. I would love to know what it means.

That is the case I think because if you watch from the overview map you can see them scan with a AS and it seems to come out of the open end.

That may be it, I will try to check on that next time I am in game. I have been in battles solo and the chevron is the same color as me but when in a squad they are blue, not green. I think you are correct, good job.

It isn't squadless mercs, it isn't squad leaders I am not sure what they are but I do want to know. I haven't seen the pattern but I am too busy doing #logilove with fat kids to take the time to study them.
